#### Pioneering the use of second-life battery energy storage systems (BESS), Elli takes a significant step towards a greener future. #### 

In collaboration with Cellect Energy, ELLI – A brand of the Volkswagen Group, leads the automotive industry by becoming the first-ever automotive company listed on EPEX Spot to start trading on the German electricity market. In Baunatal, Germany, Elli has deployed the first second-life battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 560kWh. This innovative system enables intraday trading on the European electricity market's largest power exchange, EPEX Spot.  

The BESS in Baunatal utilizes batteries sourced from Volkswagen's 'E-up!' range of electric vehicles. This successful partnership showcases the commitment of both companies to sustainable energy solutions and paves the way for future advancements in the automotive and energy sectors. 

This project is a pioneering testbed for a digital energy trading platform. Elli plans further deployments of more second-life BESS on its path to leveraging the relatively new technology to integrate EVs via vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-home (V2H) technologies. 

Cellect Energy played an instrumental role in the project by providing a comprehensive software solution that enabled the utilization of existing EV battery modules in a stationary setup. Through automating the control and communication between trading software and the physical battery asset, Cellect's solution facilitated efficient and seamless operation. 

Cellect´s proprietary platform allowed for real-time remote monitoring, tracking, and managing these assets through a unified interface. With its Cellect API and Cellect Control offerings, the company created a solution with a minimal integration requirement.

With the mission to enable the energy transition by making batteries reliable and profitable, Cellect Energy has been on a journey to provide novel technological solutions to empower the energy storage industry. These efforts were recognized at the Energy Storage Awards, a testament to its commitment to innovation.

Battery storage technology, the most scalable form of grid-scale storage, has seen robust growth in recent years. The global energy storage market is set to grow fifteen-fold by 2030, with an estimated 387 gigawatts (GW) of new energy storage capacity expected to be added globally from 2022 to 2030 (BloombergNEF). This increase is more than Japan's entire power generation capacity, highlighting the substantial strides being made in ESS.

- Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS): With advancements in lithium-ion technology, Battery Energy Storage Systems have emerged as a leading solution for energy storage. They offer several distinct features, such as rapid response times, high scalability, and modular deployment, making them versatile for various applications. Furthermore, when paired with solar installations, BESS can effectively smooth out energy output, ensuring the availability of solar energy even during nighttime or cloudy periods. Additionally, BESS has the advantage of storing large amounts of energy and discharging it quickly when needed. However, it's important to note that BESS may have a limited lifespan and require replacement after a certain number of charge-discharge cycles.
- Pumped Hydro Storage: Pumped hydro storage, one of the oldest and most established energy storage methods, offers distinct advantages. This technique harnesses surplus electricity to pump water uphill, effectively storing potential energy. The stored water is released when electricity is needed, flowing downhill and powering turbines to generate electricity. Its exceptional efficiency sets pumped hydro storage apart, boasting up to 80% round-trip efficiency. Moreover, it can store significant amounts of energy, providing long-duration storage solutions. It is worth considering that the utilization of pumped hydro storage is constrained by the necessity for appropriate topography, such as hills or mountains, limiting its implementation.
- Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES): CAES is a promising technology that utilizes compressed air to store energy. Excess electricity is used to compress air, which is then stored in underground caverns or tanks. When energy is needed, the compressed air is released and drives turbines to generate electricity. CAES has the advantage of storing large amounts of energy and has a long duration of storage. It has the potential for repurposing existing infrastructure, such as retired natural gas fields or salt caverns, for energy storage. However, one limitation of CAES is its lower round-trip efficiency compared to other storage technologies, as some energy is lost during compression and expansion processes
- Flywheels: Flywheels offer a unique approach to energy storage, harnessing mechanical energy. They store energy and release it as electricity on demand by accelerating a spinning rotor to high speeds. With advantages such as high power density, rapid response times, and long lifespan, flywheels provide instantaneous power and boast a high energy conversion efficiency. These qualities make them well-suited for applications requiring short-duration energy bursts. It is worth noting that flywheels are better suited for high-power applications due to their comparatively lower energy storage capacity than other storage technologies. They are less ideal for long-duration energy storage.

Each of these ESS types has its unique benefits and constraints. However, BESS stands out with its flexibility and adaptability, positioning it as a frontrunner in the energy storage industry. As technology advances, we can expect further innovations and improvements in ESS, paving the way for a more sustainable and efficient energy future.

To ensure a certain battery lifetime, it is crucial to consider the operating conditions. Overtime usage of batteries results in a loss of battery efficiency, reduced capacity, and increased internal resistance, generally referred to as battery aging. The aging depends on multiple mechanisms and can happen even if batteries are not operated. During operation, factors like temperature, state of charge, energy throughput, depth of discharge, and C-rate affect the aging and with it the battery lifetime. To tackle this, battery manufacturers offer a performance warranty. It is a contract between your business and the battery system supplier to guarantee a particular lifetime and energy capacity during the performance warranty period. The contract is usually standardized for smaller industrial systems and negotiated on a project basis for larger systems. You are contractually obliged to operate the battery within the operational constraints of the performance warranty; otherwise, you can lose the warranty. The operational constraints can be defined daily or yearly or set as upper and lower thresholds that can't be exceeded at any moment of your operation.
